Hosea 8:1-3 "Set the trumpet to your lips, for a vulture is over the house of the Lord, because they have broken my covenant, and transgressed my law. To me they cry, My God, we Israel know thee. Israel has spurned the good; the enemy shall pursue him."
When we spurn the good, the enemy will pursue us, it really is that simple. God offers His covenant, His protection, but we are free to break it, as Israel did, and that leaves us open and vulnerable to the enemy's attacks. When those attacks come, as they absolutely will, we cry out "Hey, God, it's me, I know you, you know me! Come help me!" as Israel does here. We treat God as if He will take any amount of abuse and neglect and still come running to our aid in our time of need. The crazy part is, He will, as long as we sincerely repent. But notice that Israel here is not repenting of their transgressions. They are just relying on the special relationship they have with God, calling out to Him to help them based solely on the relationship, a relationship they have spurned. They have no intention of changing, they just want His to rescue them so they can go right on with their wicked ways.
The times when we cry out for help with no intention of changing are the times when God allows the enemy to pursue us. It really is something we've chosen, something we allowed by spurning the good, and thus His protection. We know we are in this kind of place when we see the vultures, and there are a lot of vultures lurking about these days. I think it is a good idea to ask if any or hovering over our house.
