Hebrews 6:9-20. Paul is encouraging us to persevere. Even if our actions are not yet producing fruit, God is not so unjust as to overlook our works and the love that we show when doing them. We need to keep earnestly trying, staying faithful and full of "hope until the end." We should be "imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises." Paul then uses Abraham as an example - God swore to Abraham by his own name (as there is nothing greater to swear by!) that he would bless and multiply Abraham. And so Abraham patiently endured and ultimately obtained the promise. In time, God renewed his promise to all of us by sending his son. We know, therefore, that God will never be false, and so "we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us." Jesus has gone before us. God himself has obtained the fulfillment of the promise for us, "[w]e have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul."
God always keeps his promises! But his time is not our time, and his ways are not our ways. We cannot understand the vastness and infinite nature of his love, but he tells us and shows us again and again. He sacrificed himself for us, once for all on the cross, and also every single day in the Eucharist. His love is an anchor for our souls. Where else can we turn? There is only one completely true thing - him - and he loves us so much he died for us. Any small act of love we do for love him ties us into that love so that, through Christ, we can obtain the promises of salvation.
