Deuteronomy 31:20 "For when I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, which I swore to give to their fathers, and they have eaten and are full and grown fat, they will turn to other gods and serve them, and despise and break my covenant."

God so wants to love and bless us, and we so abuse His love and blessings. He makes promises to us, prepares us for their fulfillment, leads us to them, and we are filled. For a while, we are thankful and we praise and bless Him, but then we grow fat and complacent, we forget who gave us all of our blessings, and we take them for granted, as if they are our right, or solely the fruits of our labor.

Lacking meaning without God, we then turn to other things to take God's place in our lives, to fill the emptiness we feel from having all we can eat without remembering the times we didn't, and the God who led us to this place. It is a vicious cycle, and one I think many are in the "complacency and turning to other gods" stage of right now.
