Song of Solomon 5:4 "My beloved put his hand to the latch, and my heart was thrilled within me."

In the middle of the night, after having put off her garment, bathed her feet, and gone to bed, where she "slept, but [her] heart was awake", her beloved comes to her door. (Song of Solomon 5:2-3). At first, she hesitates, she had just put off her garment, how could she put it on? She had just bathed her feet, how could she soil them again? (Song of Solomon 5:3). But then, her heart thrills as she hears him put his hand to the latch, and she goes to the door.

This is the way we should be in love with God! This is the way He is in love with us! He is crazy about us! He comes knocking on our door saying "Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my perfect one." (Song Solomon 5:2), desperate for us to let Him in, hoping that we feel the same way. So often we don't, and He goes away saddened, as He does here when His beloved hesitates. When her thrilled heart compels her to go to the door, she finds her beloved "had turned and gone". Her heart fails, and she goes out into the night searching for Him, encountering distress and danger (Song of Solomon 5:6-8).

God will never force Himself on us. But although He departs when we are not ready for His love, He never stops loving us. He always feels this way about us. When we finally wake up and listen to our hearts, when we seek Him out, having realized our desperate need for Him, He will be there, and our love story with Him will have no end.
